On the exhale

    Relax and lean in

    Breathe that second breath

And catch this kiss on the exhale

    Catch this contentment

Hard won on a winter’s day

Sighing relief after a long almost-goodbye

Breathe again into a happier thought

      That love doesn’t require proof

      But is constantly proven

      In staying close and quiet

Even when our past claims our vision

    Hold this moment near, always

As a reminder of bridges we’ve built

Waters we’ve crossed, land we’ve claimed

On which we will put a single stone after stone

To mark a path best walked arm-in-arm

    Footfalling ever away from yesterday

"On the exhale" poetry by Roshan James, Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario
